“…Thy Kingdom Come”
The last few prayer letters contained explanations of the ‘Lord’s Prayer’, line-by-line. We are on the third line.
After this manner therefore pray ye:
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. Matthew 6:9-15 (KJV)
The disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray. Jesus said to ‘pray in this manner’. This means it is not necessarily a prayer to be recited word-for-word as a ritual with no meaning, but rather a model for us to understand communication with our heavenly Father. The first few lines before ‘Thy kingdom come’ are not necessarily a petition. ‘Our Father Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name’, is more of a general salutation of sorts; an acknowledgement and confession of Who it is we are speaking to. ‘Thy kingdom come’ follows on this trail, and yet should not be merely an acknowledgement, but also a vocal desire of the heart.
1. What is the description of the ‘kingdom’?
a. It is the Lord’s. (1 Chron. 29:11, Ps. 22:28, Matt. 6:13)
b. It is an everlasting kingdom. (Ps. 145:13, 2 Peter 1:11))
c. It shall never be destroyed. (Dan. 2:44)
d. One must repent to enter it. (Matt. 3:2, Matt.4:17, Acts. 2:3
e. We are to seek and desire it more than our own creature comforts.
(Matt. 6:33)
f. There are ‘mysteries’ concerning it that some know and
some don’t know. (Matt. 13:11)
g. Those who are in it are likened to little children. (Matt. 19:14)
h. When one understands that loving the Lord with
all his being is more than any ritual or works, he is close to
it. (Understanding alone obviously is not the key.) (Matt. 12:32-34)
i. It cannot be entered or seen unless one is ‘born again’. (John 3:3)
j. It is not of this world. (John 18:36)
k. It is of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
(Rom. 14:17)
l. Those who practice by habit the following will not inherit it:
sexual practices outside marriage, hatred and all it involves,
murder, and drunkenness and the like. (Gal. 5:19-21)
2. How does any of this apply to us, the prayer partners
of The Endo Club?
Since Jesus’ model for prayer is to acknowledge and be desirous of God’s kingdom to come to earth, then so should ours. Are we desiring God’s holy rule in our daily lives, or our own rule? Are we seeking His kingdom ways during prayer, or are we merely saying our prayers, then walking away from His authority in our day-to-day lives and doing what we want, going where we want, eating what we want, wearing what we want and saying what we want?
The New Testament has a lot to say about the way we should live as believers. I highly recommend reading 1 Timothy and Titus to find out how He desires His kingdom residents to live. We should examine our hearts as to whether we really want ‘Thy kingdom come’, or our own kingdom. If we need to repent in this area, then may we do so. He is loving and compassionate and more than willing to help us to rearrange our hearts and minds to conform to His kingdom ways so that we may have the joy and peace that comes from humbly placing ourselves under His kingship; under His provident blessing and protection and peace.
May we make this prayer our own, as well as pray it for the other ladies on the site.
