February 2006 - Determining the will of God

Hello!

The last few prayer letters contained explanations of the ‘Lord’s Prayer', line-by-line from Matthew 6:9-14. For prior letters, see below.

Determining the will of GOD-
Help with treatment decisions and all of life.

Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Matthew 6:10

How hard it is to pray those words and mean it. I struggle with this because I can be a control freak. Let us give God total control over our entire lives! Remember he has control anyways. Submit! Here is the example of the greatest submission! This is what Jesus said before He was to be crucified!

Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will. Matthew 26:39

Notice that Jesus did express his preference about going through this torture... but in the end, he submitted and died for each one of us! He laid down his own will and took up the Father's. Thank You Jesus!

Will You submit your will to his
We won't always know the will of God in every situation. There are times when we know the will of God, but we won't like it. There are also times when we know the will of God, but we don't understand it.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways declares the Lord. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:8-9

Questions to ask yourself:

Have you looked for what He would have you do?
By myself, I can do nothing: I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself, but him who sent me. John 5:30

Before going on to the next questions, please think about this next question as it will effect or nullify our prayers big time!

 Have you been born again?
Read John 3:5-8 or the "don't read" page of this website or the whole book of John(new testament). We already know that this is God's will for all of us as the Bible tells us so!

For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise Him up on the last day. John 6:40

And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 1 John 5:11-12

The Holy Spirit dwells in believers. Because of this we can seek out God's wisdom...

We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom, but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. 1 Corinthians 2:12-15

Have you prayed about your decision?
Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.  And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.  Phil 4:6-7

Have you looked for Godly wisdom?
If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. James 1:5

Have you searched the Scriptures/the BIBLE for the answer?
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. 2 Tim 3:16

Have you repented (a change of heart and mind from sin toward God)?  The word of God tells us that He will not hear our prayers when we are in sin, untruth or indifferent...

If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me. Psalm 66:18

Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall not find me. Proverbs 1:28

Have you delighted in the Lord, putting Him as first place in your life?
Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4

Are you allowing the world's attitudes or influences to affect your decisions?
Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will. Rom 12:2
Do you have doubts? Which decision gives you peace?
See Phil. 4:6-7 above & Col 3:15-17 below. Remember Christ is the Prince of Peace. His peace will accompany his authority.

Have you patiently waited for God to answer?
I waited patiently for the Lord' and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. Psalm 40:1

Have you sought advice from those who are walking with Christ?Read Titus chapter 2
The popular choice is not always the right choice or the healthiest choice. Unfortunately sometimes there are selfish desires behind the treatment or drug pushed on us. Another treatment offered to us would put us in sin if we are unmarried. Another treatment could be a large burden on our family... Does your Dr. have your best interest in mind? Would he/she give this treatment to his/her spouse? Ask! Please pray about your decisions, seek Godly counsel and pray for good Drs.

If God shows you his will, will you accept it even though it is hard or does not make sense Oh how this can be difficult at times!
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and he will make your paths straight. Prov 3:5

Can you thank God for the outcome? Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since  members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Col 3:15-17
